Zandi Ngwenya was born in 1980. Like his name suggests there is more to him than meets the eye. He grew up in a music motivated family, his father having owned a sound hire company.
In 1989 when his father opened a night club called The Dukes Place in Vosloorus, Music breathed life into Zandi and DJ Zan-D was born.
At the age of 12, he was already living the DJ experience. Tailing his brother (Dj Choc) he could be found trawling the streets of Johannesburg for good and exclusive records. By then he had already started to mix but only under Choc’s supervision.
Towards the end of his school days, Zan-D was already featuring on radio (Yfm, with Fresh on the mad half hour), school discos, Street bashes, parties, weddings and even clubs.

For the love of music, Zan D decided to move to the dance capital of the world (London) where he lived for over 6 years. It wasn’t easy to get jobs as a DJ, as the industry there was very competitive. Not letting that discourage him he worked his way up from hosting house parties to playing in the UK’s top clubs. These include some popular bars in the heart of London eg;
- The Zoo Bar in Leicester square,
- Bar Room Bar in China Town and
- The O Bar in Soho
His first experience at a London Club was at the Africa Centre in Covent Garden; where the famous Soul 2 Soul played their first ever gig. Not only did he play in London but he also played at clubs around the UK and these include The Cascade (Birmingham), The Warehouse (Norwich) and Club Roots (Tottenham).
